Homes for Sale in Amado, AZ
Blending history and a love of the natural world — with just a touch of Tinsletown glitz — the small town of Amado is a charming place to live and play. Amado is host to a variety of important animal species and is part of the second-largest bird species habitat in the world. After the sun goes down, the stars come out, and MMT (Multiple Mirror Telescope) Observatory — a joint project of the University of Arizona and The Smithsonian Institution — provides a perfect vantage point for star-gazing.
Amado’s historic past as a stagecoach stop led to the creation of one of its more colorful landmarks, the Halfway Station. This gas station and restaurant became an unlikely draw for Hollywood A-listers looking for a getaway. A-listers stole away to this area for anonymity, nature’s beauty, and fun away from paparazzi. But that doesn’t mean that they weren’t spotted every once in a while.
In its heyday, the restaurant played host to luminaries like Elizabeth Taylor and Paul McCartney. Paul McCartney filmed his music video for “Stranglehold” at the Halfway Station.
The giant longhorn skull serves as the entrance for the Longhorn Grill and Saloon. It’s a real eye-catcher and has appeared as a cinematic backdrop as long ago as 1974.
Across the street from the skull was the Cow Palace Restaurant, a famous historic steakhouse and watering hole in the 1920s for meandering Hollywood stars. Framed on the walls were photos of the likes of John Wayne, Douglas Fairbanks, and Mae West, alongside mounted heads of wildlife. The Cow Palace remained open while the skull kept cycling through owners — until a flood in downtown Amado closed the Cow Palace for good in September 2018.
Amado is still drawing visitors with its vintage charm and scenic grandeur. Don’t miss the opportunity to check out its dining, shopping, and art studios.
